What Does 好好 (hǎohǎo) Mean? The Warm Side of Spoken Chinese
When someone leaves, they might say 你好好休息 (nǐ hǎohǎo xiūxi) — not just 你休息. That doubled 好好 is what makes it warm.
Doubling 好 before a verb means "do it properly / nicely / well," and it softens the whole sentence. 好好休息 means "rest well, rest up comfortably" — much warmer than a flat 休息.
It works with other words too
- 慢慢走 (mànmàn zǒu) — take your time / mind how you go
- 早早睡 (zǎozǎo shuì) — get to bed nice and early
- 多多保重 (duōduō bǎozhòng) — take good care of yourself
Double a word before a verb and the tone turns gentle and caring. It's one of the easiest ways to sound warm in Chinese.
